Hey - I’m back. I’ve been traveling a bit, so I left you hanging for a few weeks, but I am back and ready to start the new year with fresh ideas. Thank you for listening to my thoughts, as most of them are jumbled and sometimes incomplete. I’m excited to improve, and grow over this new year and write things that speak to you and relate to you. Cheers to 2018, let’s make it our best year yet.
All the hype at the beginning of any year, is largely around the goals we set, and all of our expectations that we hope are met during the new year. It’s great to have goals and things we strive to accomplish. There are sets of goals I have every year and I’m excited to see how and when I will accomplish them. We either talk about how great the year before was, or how we can’t wait to start fresh again because the previous year came with a great deal of pain or stress or some other word that sums up, a difficult year. Either way, we’re heading into a new year, and there are things we want to transpire.
I started a tradition in 2016, that I carried out into 2017, and now 2018. I created a google doc, a virtual journal if you will, highlighting my year, and recording events, feelings, problems, celebrations, ect. that took place. Each document is titled something different, with my theme for that year. In 2016, it was all about my year of singleness so my journal document was titled, “Finding Jesus and Me in 2016” - I know the grammar isn’t correct in that sentence, but it rhymes so I went with it. Anyway, 2017, was “Celebration and Liberation in 2017. This year my theme is, “Growing and Growing Up” in 2018. I love having themes for my years, because it helps me align my goals. Each year, through my journals I have been able to see so much growth in myself and all that God has done.
Coming to the conclusion of 2017, I started to experience a lot of difficulties that were challenging me to grow. I began to feel a lot of growing pains. Each time something challenging came up, I realized I hadn’t dealt with it before, and that the next year was going to be a year of growth. So I titled this year, “Growing and Growing Up in 2018” because I know there is still so much I need to learn. I need to grow in my spiritual walk, my relationship with friends, family, and my boyfriend. I need to grow in my education, and gain a deeper understanding of who God is, and who I am because of him. There are areas I need to grow up in, and become more independent. I have lived 21 years of my life, dependent on my parents, and this year it’s time I grow up. I know that in 2018, I have a different role to play in my life. There are new things I am responsible for, and wise decisions that need to be made. This is going to require greater knowledge of the world around me, and a deeper love for people. There is going to be more asked of me this year then there has been in the previous ones, and I know I am going to grow in the process. Life is moving quickly, and I don’t want it to pass by without developing and further becoming the woman God has called me to be. With every trial, and blessing in 2018, I want to be shaped and molded into that woman.
I took time before I created my journal, to decide what I wanted this year to be about. Here’s a few questions to get you started, if you want to create your own.
What is God asking of you this year?
What is something He is challenging you to do?
What’s your theme for the year?
What is the most important thing you want to see happen this year?
How do you want to grow in 2018?
It’s crazy looking back on my 2016 and 2017 journals. Each year, there are new challenges and blessings. There are new areas of growth, new relationships, and new opportunities. Last year, all three of my goals were fulfilled and it was an incredible feeling to celebrate the completion of them. If your curious to know what they are, I’ll tell ya.
1. I wanted to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. - I ended up going on a diet called the Whole 30, and continued to eat well after I came off of it.
2. I wanted to quit working at Starbucks and get a new job. - I got hired at Ark coffee company. My first real barista job.
3. I wanted to find my person. God blessed me with my best friend :)
These were things I was constantly asking God for in 2017. They required trust and discipline. I am so amazed at how God works and how these blessings came to me in the year I prayed for them. God is so good, and I am so ready for 2018.
So maybe you had a discouraging 2017, and you’re hoping 2018 is better. Pray about it. Ask God. Make this year count in every way. Don’t waste a second of it, mowing over last years problems. God wants to do something NEW. Answer the questions I’ve put above, and create your own journal 2018. It will be great to go over it next year and see your growth.
A few of my goals for 2018:
Be consistent in reading my bible
Serve others first
