Pressure to be Perfect

OH hey, I’m back. It’s been a while, and I am sorry about that. But I want to tell you a bit about why I took some time away, and about the new time I will be posting. From here on out, I will only be posting one day a week. I love this blog so much, and I want the things I produce to be great. So, instead of feeling pressured to write to you twice a week, I have decided on writing to you every Tuesday.

Let’s begin.

Here’s a thought: Do you know who you’re following? I mean really think about this question before you answer it. If you’re following Jesus, do you really know him? I don’t just mean that you know he died on the cross for your sins, but I mean everything else. Do you know his character, how he handles himself in difficult situations, how he feels about people of different races, how he feels about scripture? DO YOU KNOW HIM? When asking myself this question, it was a resounding YES, of course I do. But, I started to realize that as I read the bible, I was looking for answers on how to be a better Christian (which is a good thing to know). I think this creates so much anxiety for us as Christians. We can feel that we are never doing enough, and our life is never going to get to where it needs to be. I’ll be honest with you, sometimes when I read the bible, I just feel bad about myself, because I am not doing all that I can to be a good Christian. I start to try and be better, do better, and obey all of God’s commands. What’s my motive? For me to feel good about myself, and consider myself a good Christian. Is that the point? NO. We should obey God, out of our love for him.

That’s when this question arose. How do you begin to love someone more? You must get to KNOW them. The more you know about a person, the more you begin to love them, and see the wonderful creation they are. So, I decided to date Jesus. I understand, the terminology here might be a bit for you to handle if you have never heard the term, “date Jesus” but essentially, I wanted to read the word and get to know who I am following. Not for the sole purpose to do the right thing, or be super knowledgeable about the Bible and know every single passage so I can blurt out the correct answer in bible class. I wanted to get to know Jesus on a deeply personal level, as I would with any other person in my life. I started with Matthew and each time I read my bible I ask myself, “what does this reveal about who Jesus is?” Everyday I am learning more and more about him. I invite you to do the same. Start somewhere, anywhere you like. Ask yourself what this shows about who Jesus is. Get to know him.

I have a few questions for you as you begin to ponder the thoughts I have presented above.

  1. Do you know who you’re following?

  2. Do you feel anxious as a Christian trying to do everything right all the time?

  3. Are you weary?

  4. Do you feel guilty when you read the bible and think you aren’t doing enough?

If I am honest, I can answer a yes to all of these questions (with the exception of the first one. I’m still learning).  I feel if I am not prophesying, speaking in tongues, healing the sick, and speaking at conferences, that somehow I’m not as great a Christian as those around me. The comparison factor plays a huge part here. As I have been a Christian my whole life, there are countless times I have struggled with this idea. If I am not feeling worship one day, or I forget to pray, or I don’t feel like going to church, I feel this sense of guilt as though I am not a good Christian. What a sense of relief when you realize UM, IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU. It isn’t about me and how I feel. Being a Christian isn’t this endless rule book, that forces you to feel bad about yourself when you do something wrong. Being a Christian is about JESUS. Do you know him? The more you know him, the more you love him, the more you realize it’s not about you; God will do something great. You’ll be release from the anxiety, guilt and shame, you feel in your walk.

So let me tell you this, I forget to pray, I don’t always feel like worshiping, I don’t always feel like reading my bible, or going to church, I think mean thoughts, I lie, and I sometimes have a bad attitude. There are countless other things I do that make me feel bad about myself, but I share all of this with you for one reason. THANK GOD it’s NOT about me. It’s not about how I feel, or what I do, it’s about HIM. I will always fall short. BUT GOD’S grace, has covered me. I am found in him, YOU are found in him. Don’t carry the weight of your sins. It’s not about you, it’s about JESUS.

Do you know him?
